Perhaps Quaithe is directing Dany to go to Asshai and then continue beyond into Ulthos. Obviously I think 'pass beneath the shadow' simply means 'go to Asshai' so its possible that Daenerys will eventually be headed that way, but what is more mysterious is the 'to go north, you must journey south, to reach the west you must go east' To go forward you must go back and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow. To go north, you must journey south, to reach the west you must go east. The only quote I can bring that might potentially have this make sense is what Quaithe said to Daenerys Here was my bit of speculation from that thread I posted: It's insanely speculative with little to no evidence backing it up, but its fun to speculate. I thought it would be crazy interesting if going past Asshai and then down into Ulthos eventually leads you into the Land of Always Winter. I've had similar thoughts about this as well.
